Objectives

  • Describe the physiologic changes of pulmonary circulation in neonates following birth and the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
  • Summarize the acute management of PPHN and the pharmacology of common treatment agents including nitric oxide, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, endothelin receptor antagonists, and prostacyclins
  • Assess clinical studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of enteral agents for the chronic management of PPHN
